Zimbabwe Sugarcane Development Association sweetens cane farmers’ Christmas

George Maponga in Chiredzi

The Zimbabwe Sugarcane Development Association (ZSDA) has handed over grocery hampers to its members.

Speaking on the sidelines of an annual general meeting held at a Chiredzi lodge yesterday, the association’s chairperson Mr Elisha Tamirepi recounted the challenges faced by ZSDA members during the year, singling out the haggling over sugar cane pricing with the country’s sole sugar miller, Tongaat Huletts Zimbabwe.

Tongaat enjoys monopoly in cane milling and is always at loggerheads with farmers over pricing.

Wild animals also destroyed sugarcane in Mkwasine Estates and the meeting called for the Government to address the problem.

Members also highlighted the water and power challenges in Mkwasine.

Mr Tamirepi said the ZSDA and some investors are exploring ways of setting up a mill in Mkwasine as the area is too far from one.

He said this year’s cane production guarantees the nation of adequate stocks next year.
