The City of Harare awarded its long-serving employees with long-service awards at a ceremony held on Friday at the City Sports Centre.
The recognition was extended to those who have served between 20 and 45 years.
In a speech read on his behalf by the city’s acting human capital director, Mr Bosman Matengarufu, acting town clerk Engineer Phakamile Mabhena Moyo emphasised the crucial role of teamwork in achieving the council’s vision of a functional and inclusive community.
“For us to achieve our vision that works for everyone, we need to work as a team. We have come to recognise the work and participation of our workforce.
He highlighted the council’s initiatives to support employees’ productivity, including training opportunities to enhance their skills.
“There is a clarion call for us to improve on service delivery. This is further amplified by the President’s Call to Action for local authorities not to compromise on service delivery.”
Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume highlighted the financial challenges confronting the city council.
“This harsh environment is impacting on our revenue collection capacity because many people are failing to pay their rates.
“However, the city has embarked on a decentralisation process that has divided Harare into five regions. This strategy will enhance sustainable service delivery and bring development closer to the residents.”
