VICE President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has disclosed that starting in 2025, science, technology, engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education will be taught from Early Childhood Development
(ECD) level.
Departing from his prepared speech, Dr Chiwenga said this direction will immensely benefit the nation in identifying children’s skills at an early stage.
STEM subjects are mathematics, biology, physics, and chemistry.
He was speaking at the inaugural Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association here in Victoria Falls.
“As of next year, STEM will be taught from the ECD level. When a child is scientific in thinking, a country is built,” said Dr Chiwenga.
“A country is not built by having PhDs in literature.
“Yes, all these things are okay so that when we relax, we want someone to do poetry for us. They are entertainers,” said Dr Chiwenga.
He added, “We need to identify children’s potential early. If we are to grow industries, we need to be innovators. That is what our President (Mnangagwa) has tasked us as a country.”
In 2014, Early Childhood Education was officially introduced into formal school as part of the Infant School Module, and primary school education became a nine-year course.
