THE city of Victoria Falls is poised to create a historic moment as it hosts the 10th edition of the All-African Tug of War Championships scheduled from June 20 to 22.

Nine countries, including the hosts will compete in a challenging display of muscle strength, agility and mental sharpness.
Zimbabwe are the defending champions, having won the competition in Kimberly, South Africa last year.

The Zimbabwe Tug-of-War Federation (ZITWF) acting vice president Lazarus Nkomo confirmed they are in preparing for the event.

Nkomo revealed this during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Ingwebu Breweries Tug-of-War championships last Saturday.

“We will be hosting the 10th edition of the African Tug of War Championships in Victoria Falls from 20 to 22 June 2024,” said Nkomo.

He said men’s teams will take part in the 720, 640 kg categories, while the ladies will compete in the 520 and 560s. The mixed contest will be in the 580kg category of the competition.

“There shall be five national teams for each of the stated categories and each team comprises of nine pullers and a coach. Zimbabwe shall have a strong contingent of close to 450 participants,” he said.

Meanwhile, ZITWF has sent an SOS for Team Zimbabwe sponsorship.

“Sport in Zimbabwe has largely been supported by various corporate sponsors who have enabled Zimbabwe to fulfil its fixtures in international games. ZITWF is open for discussions regarding branding as a way of marketing your products and services.

“We should be grateful to get assistance that will enable us to compete in the games as we pull the rope for Zimbabwe and defend the trophy,” reads the letter signed by Nkomo.
