THE Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has announced the tragic death of 62-year-old ranger Josphat Mandishara, who was fatally injured by an elephant during a routine patrol in the Gatche-gatche area near Kariba.
The incident occurred on the evening of March 13, 2025, around 10 PM, while Ranger Mandishara was returning to the harbour where their boat was docked.
He encountered a charging elephant that emerged unexpectedly, leading to his fatal injuries. Mandishara was accompanied by two fellow rangers and a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) detail at the time, but they were occupied elsewhere during the incident.
Mandishara’s remains were transported to Kariba District Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and the incident has been reported to the police. In response, ZimParks has dispatched rangers from the Charara Safari Area to manage the problem animal.
ZimParks Director General, Professor Edson Gandiwa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to Mandishara’s family, friends, and colleagues.
Mandishara is remembered for his dedication to wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe.
ZimParks has emphasised its commitment to staff and wildlife safety, vowing to implement measures to prevent such tragedies.
