The African Union Commission has appointed a Zimbabwean, Ms Chido Cleopatra Mpemba, as Africa’s Youth Envoy.
The appointment was made on the commemorations of African Youth Day, held on November 1 annually.
This year’s celebrations ran under the theme: ‘Defining the future today; youth-led solutions for building the Africa we want.’
In a statement on Monday, African Union Commission chairperson, Dr Moussa Faki Mahamat, said the appointment of the youth envoy was meant to amplify voices of young people in the development of the continent.
“As part of my renewed commitment to amplify the voices of young people and broaden their participation in the development of the continent, I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Chido Cleopatra Mpemba, a native Zimbabwean as my next envoy for youth.
“Ms Chido Mpemba was selected following a rigorous recruitment process of hundreds of applicants,” he said.
“I’m confident that, with her profound knowledge of issues affecting young people and working in close collaboration with relevant departments of the Commission, she will contribute to the effective implementation of African Union youth’s policies and programmes.”
