VETERAN Zimbabwean journalist Mkhululi Chimoio has been voted in as Head of Communications and Media for the Southern African Freelancers’ Association (SAFREA).

This is a key position that will see him craft the communications strategy for one of the region’s most influential media networks.

Chimoio was voted into office by his counterparts from across Southern Africa.

His election marks a milestone in SAFREA’s ongoing drive to promote the profile and professional standards of freelance media professionals.

Founded in 1999, SAFREA is a not-for-profit membership organisation with over 500 members across Southern Africa.

It is the voice for freelance journalists, editors, writers, designers, photographers, and other creatives in the communications sector.

The organisation provides vital support, including training, webinars, networking opportunities, and its authoritative annual Rates Report, which establishes standards for reasonable freelance rates.

Chimoio boasts years of experience covering governance, technology, defence, SDGs, human rights, and development issues in the continent.

In 2024, his reporting earned him the highly sought-after Simba Mhere Media Award for Investigative Excellence at the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards, in recognition of his solution-driven and impactful journalism that continues to inform policy and spark discussion across borders.

He also presently works as Communications Advisor to the Prime Minister of the State of the African Diaspora (SOAD), a further indication of his heightened profile within pan-African media and governance circles.

Reacting to news of his election, Chimoio said, “I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been elected to the role of Head of Communications and Media at SAFREA.”

“This is not just a personal triumph but a challenge. I look forward to strengthening our communication networks, raising awareness of freelance work in the region, and building camaraderie among media professionals.”

He added, “Freelance journalism and storytelling matter – they hold power to account, elevate under heard voices and demand transparency. I’m eager to help SAFREA’s members share impactful narratives and secure the professional recognition they deserve.”

As African media outlets look to freelance professionals due to shrinking newsroom budgets, SAFREA has emerged as a vital tool for support, training, and advocacy of the interests of independent communicators.

Originally, from Mvundlana Line in Tsholotsho, Chimoio described his election as a significant victory for Zimbabwean communicators, freelance journalists, and media practitioners, noting that it places a Zimbabwean voice at the forefront of a powerful regional platform committed to fair pay, professional recognition, and ethical standards.

He emphasised that his leadership will help unlock greater access to SAFREA’s training programmes, resources, and cross-border networks for Zimbabwean freelancers, while ensuring their stories and struggles gain greater visibility in regional and continental media spaces.
