THE National Environment Cleaning Day, launched by President Mnangagwa last year, is fast cascading to the grassroot, with Zimbabweans across all provinces taking time to clean their surroundings. President Mnangagwa led the clean-up campaign in Harare, while the First Lady was in Mutare, where she led the community in cleaning Sakubva Bus Terminus and a produce market.
The First Lady challenged women and youths to derive value from waste by starting income-generating projects in groups.
“As the First Lady, patron and ambassador on the environment, I am calling upon the women and youths to form groups that can start projects using waste products.
“Let us all be innovative and explore ways of extracting value from the waste products. Industries should adopt the extended producer responsibility principle, which calls upon all generators of waste to follow their products from manufacture throughout their life-cycle up to disposal,” she said.
In Mashonaland Central, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Senator Monica Mavhunga led the exercise at Mt Darwin High School and bus terminus.
In Bindura, several business people and corporates took part by cleaning areas around their premises.
Minister Mavhunga commended the Mt Darwin community for embracing the clean-up campaign championed by President Mnangagwa.
“I am thankful that we all listened to the President. I know that the clean-up campaigns are done once every month, but we should make it our daily priority and maintain a clean environment.
“I appeal to the local authority to increase refuse bins and collect litter timeously,” she said.
“We experienced cholera here in Mt Darwin at Mukaradzi area and another case emanated at this bus terminus. Cleanliness improves our standard of living because in the absence of such diseases, you will able to do your day-to-day activities.”
In the Midlands Province it was a hive of activity across cities and towns.
