Zimbabweans should commit themselves to defending the country’s sovereignty as the country celebrates 33 years of self-rule today, Zanu-PF national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo has said. Speaking on Star FM radio on Tuesday evening on a programme, The Hub, Cde Khaya Moyo said it was important for people to look at some of the achievements of Zimbabwe after independence among them the Unity Accord signed between Zanu-PF and PF-Zapu in 1987.
He said Zimbabweans were expected to jealously guard and consolidate the unity that President Mugabe and the late Vice President and national hero Dr Joshua Nkomo wanted to see in the country when they signed the Unity Accord.
“It is a day to revisit our position, never to betray. . . to betray the revolution and a day to commit ourselves to defend the sovereignty of our nation,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
“This is a great day for all Zimbabweans irrespective of their political party affiliation. We must celebrate it together as a family. . . in unity and peace so that we don’t forget the footsteps of those who sacrificed for our freedom. We must honour them by showing that what they died for was not in vain.”
He said it was important for Zimbabweans to remember the sacrifices by those who were murdered by the colonialists in their quest to see Zimbabwe free.
He said it was a day where Zimbabweans should re-dedicate themselves to land reform and indigenisation policies that were meant to conclude the independence of the country.
Cde Khaya Moyo said the imposition of illegal sanctions by the West had affected some of the development projects the country had embarked on.
He said Zimbabwe had remained resilient despite the imposition of the illegal embargoes.
He said Zanu-PF was ready for the forthcoming harmonised elections.
Cde Khaya Moyo reiterated that Zanu-PF would not condone candidate imposition while those who may want to use money to buy votes would not be tolerated.
He also dismissed claims that there was factionalism in Zanu-PF adding that if there were any party cadres involved in factionalism they were supposed to stop it.
On when the elections would be held, Cde Khaya Moyo said it was the prerogative of President Mugabe to proclaim the dates.
On Manicaland problems affecting Zanu-PF structures, he said the investigating team listened to the people and would present the report to the politburo. Cde Khaya Moyo said the revolutionary party was confident of winning the forthcoming harmonised elections.
Speaking on the same programme, Zanu-PF secretary for administration Cde Didymus Mutasa said MDC-T did not understand the meaning of independence because they were collaborating with former colonisers against Zimbabweans.
