AFRO dancehall singer Nutty O’s “amicable separation” from his manager, Diana Elisha Nheera, has been positively received for its professionalism.

After seven years of collaboration, their musical partnership ended last week, with Nutty O transitioning to new management under Don Ray.

Nheera, known as The Talent Whisper, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to work with Nutty O and reflected on their journey together:

“With love, commitment, and an unwavering passion for music, I have walked a journey with Nutty O that has been nothing short of extraordinary. Together, we poured our hearts into building something greater than the sum of its parts a brand that resonates with fans and stands as a testament to what vision and hard work can achieve.

“I look back on our time with deep admiration for the path we carved. From the studio to the stage, from quiet moments of planning to the loud echoes of success, we built a legacy rooted in purpose, integrity, and belief.

“We created and nurtured Mustard Seed, a body of work that continues to inspire, earning accolades such as Outstanding Album and Outstanding Artist of the Year at the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), Album of the Year and Best Dancehall Artist at the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA), and six Star FM Listener’s Choice Awards.

“In my role, we were also honoured with the Outstanding Talent Manager Award (Arts) and Best Artist Manager at the Zim Community Trailblazers Awards and Zim Reggae Dancehall Merit Awards,” she said.

Nheera also extended her best wishes to Nutty O for his future endeavours without her.

“To the entire music community, media, fans, friends, esteemed clients, and partners, THANK YOU for the treasured moments we shared; you made this journey worthwhile. To Nutty O and his new management under Don Ray, I wish you strength, vision, and success as you embark on this next chapter. May the seeds we planted flourish in ways we only dreamed of,” she emphasised.

However, not all parting of ways is as amiable as Nheera’s. Over the years, some musicians have experienced contentious separations with their former managers.

Below are some of the five notable manager-music split cases

·    Macheso vs. Tsandukwa

One high-profile split occurred between Alick Macheso and William Tsandukwa in 2015.

After a long partnership, Tsandukwa was replaced by Lucky Macheso and Tich Makamadze. Their separation was marred by accusations of mismanagement and embezzlement, making headlines. Despite the fallout, Macheso continues to draw large crowds.

·    Jah Prayzah vs. Philda Muchabayiwa

Jah Prayzah’s decision to part ways with Mama Filo a decade ago also made headlines. She was succeeded by Keen Mushapaidze, leading to a strategic shift in management that reaped benefits for Jah Prayzah.

Although Mama Filo laid the groundwork, Mushapaidze has proven to be a modern manager who revitalized Jah Prayzah’s career.

This weekend, he is launching a new album titled “Ndiku Mukudzei” at Old Hararians Sports Club and the response is overwhelming.

·    Suluman vs. Jakachira

The Orchestra Dendera Kings boss journey has been tumultuous, involving several managerial changes. Suluman’s decision to part ways with Jakachira marked a significant moment, and he now boasts a strong management team handling his affairs.

A lot was said in the media but the two parties are still in talking terms.

Suluman has never looked back afterwards.

His recent album launch, “Tsapo,” received overwhelming feedback, solidifying his status as one of the best musicians of his generation.

·    Tuku vs. Debbie Metcalfe

The local music scene was notably impacted in 2008 when Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi parted ways with Debbie Metcalfe, who was pivotal in his international success. Although other managers have come and gone, many believe that the era of Metcalfe marked a peak in Tuku’s career.

·    Soul Jah Love & His Managers

The late Soul Jah Love faced numerous managerial changes throughout his career, often disowning managers despite their successful efforts. While some transformed him from obscurity to a household name, his unpredictable nature made management challenging.

These high-profile splits provide insight into the complexities of artist-manager relationships in Zimbabwe. And, Nutty O’s separation from Nheera, adds to this ongoing discussion, and it remains to be seen if he will thrive under new management or face challenges ahead.
