While most musicians have taken leave from live shows and entertainment activity gets into the traditional low form that marks the beginning of each year, Zimdancehall is going against the tide.
Zimdancehall musicians and fans ignite their 2014 season on a celebratory note when they converge at Club Super Label tomorrow night for Killer T’s birthday bash.
Besides congratulating their counterpart for turning a year older, local dancehall musicians have every reason to celebrate because their genre literally ruled the showbiz scene in 2014.
Despite the numerous controversies associated with the genre and courted by fans and musicians through various unacceptable acts, Zimdancehall was the music of 2014.
New stars were born, new hits were unleashed and new riddims were unrolled.
Although, for the better part of last year, Killer T was not in the top form that spurred him to fame in the last quarter of 2013 with his “Po-po-po” chant, the lanky chanter was in the game and popped champagne with the winning team.
And tomorrow Killer T- born Kelvin Kusikwenyu – celebrates his 25th birthday and cuts the cake with the same team.
He gets blessings from Soul Jah Love, Seh Kalaz, Tocky Vibes, Freeman, Kinnah, Lady Squanda, Dhadza D, Ricky Fire, Sniper, Cello Culture, Godfatha Templeman and Gary B among others.
In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Killer T’s manager DJ Bima said they are happy to be celebrating the musician’s birthday and they have a lot in store for their fans.
“We are happy and grateful to God who has taken us this far, he has grown musically and for tomorrow’s performance we have a lot of surprises for our fans,” he said.
“We are encouraging our fans to turn up in big numbers and celebrate with us. It is because of them that we have come this far in this competitive industry.”
Biggie Chinoperekwei of Devine Assignments who are coordinating the show said they were looking forward to a memorable event.
“We are just coordinating the show and we are happy that these musicians have come together to celebrate the birthday of their colleague,” he said.
“Many dancehall artistes have celebrated their birthdays at Super Label and the joint also remains a prime dancehall venue. We are happy to host this party.
“I want to say ‘happy birthday’ to Killer T. We have worked together well in various shows and I encourage him to keep up the good spirit and continue the good work. I wish you many more fruitful years.”
Killer T was born on January 10 1990 and grew up in the high density suburb of Mbare. He hogged the limelight with his “Po-po-po” chant that accompanied most of his hits.
His songs include “Tirikumhanya”, “Makarova Ganaz”, “Masuspects”, “Garai Mavaudza”, “Mandisimbisa” and “Handisi Mumero”.
