Zimra official cleared of bribery charge

Mautsa was arrested in August last year with Vusumuzi Khumalo, a customs clearing agent in the border town. Mautsa was however, cleared of all charges after a full trial.
Khumalo’s charges had been withdrawn before plea due to lack of evidence.
Beitbridge magistrate, Mr Carrington Karidzagundi presided over the matter.
Prosecutor Mr Reason Mutimba had told the court that police received a tip off on August 26 last year, that a cross border bus coming from South Africa, was taken to a Zimra checkpoint for routine search. Khumalo, who was supposed to complete the customs formalities on behalf of Elite Bus Company, had allegedly approached Mautsa so that he could help facilitate smuggling of the goods and evadepaying customs duty.
The State alleged that the two received R1 900 and the bus proceeded to the exit point.
Police detectives intercepted the bus at the gate where a thorough search was conducted leading to the discovery of the goods hidden in one of the compartments.
The police asked for customs declaration documents but the owners failed indicating that they had bribed an officer.
Mautsa and Khumalo were subsequently arrested and the goods were forfeited to the State.
