Zim’s metrology focal point

measurements are a critical necessity for the production of quality products in the manufacturing industry; the testing and inspection of products and services; maintaining safety and environmental and health standards.
The National Metrology Institute of SIRDC serves as Zimbabwe’s focal point in all fields of measurement such as electrical, mass and volume, mechanical, force, pressure, heat, time and frequency, radiology, chemistry, etc.
Advanced measuring systems are moving into the shop floor and higher skills are needed to use these systems and interpret the results.
The NMI services range from calibration, training in metrology, consultancy in setting up of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14000, ISO/IEC 17025, etc.) for calibration and testing departments in industry, installation and commissioning of measuring equipment.
NMI also develops testing processes and equipment capable of higher precision and more accurate measurement, with the objective of transferring this technology to quality assurance departments in industry and testing laboratories.
The NMI, through a rigorous peer review process of its technical competence, is an Associate Member of the International Bureau for Mass and Measures which is the benchmark of the International Measurement System and is also signatory to the International Committee for Weights and Measures, Mutual Recognition Arrangement, which is recognition of standards used by the NMI as National Standards.
The CIPM MRA also recognises calibration and measurement certificates issued by the NMI, at least, by all signatories to the arrangement.
NMI is currently active in the following areas:
Mass & Volume – Balances, scales, weights & pipettes, measuring cylinders, burettes, moisture testers, etc.
Pressure – Pressure gauges, calibrators, etc.
Dimensional – Micrometers, vernier calipers, gauge blocks, steel rulers, dial gauges, feeler gauges, etc.
Electrical – Calibrators, multimeters, ammeters, voltmeters, power supplies, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, tachometers, etc.
Temperature – Calibrators, thermocouples, RTDs, LiGs, temperature indicators, etc.
Chemical – Conductivity, pH & TDS meters, gas analysis and gas analysers, UV-VIS, HPLC, AAS, GC-MS, FTIR, viscometers, etc.
NMI also offers the following range of metrology training courses:
1. General Metrology
2. Temperature Metrology
3. Electrical DC Low Frequency Metrology
4. Mass and Volume Metrology
5. Estimation of Measurement Uncertainty
6. Dimensional Metrology
7. Chemical Metrology
8. Tailor made courses on request.
TESTED ONCE, ACCEPTED EVERYWHERE!
