The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) has described the newly launched OpenSDG Data Portal as a crucial link between policymaking and measurable development outcomes, positioning it as a game-changer in the country’s pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking at the official launch in Harare on Wednesday, ZIMSTAT senior official Mr Aluwisio Mukavhi, standing in for Director General Mrs Tafadzwa Bandama, said the platform represents a “landmark moment” in Zimbabwe’s data and development journey.
“This platform is not just a tool — it is a bridge between data and development, between policy and impact,” said Mr Mukavhi.
“It provides a centralised digital space where the Government, researchers, civil society, development partners and the public can access real-time, disaggregated data on Zimbabwe’s SDG progress
Developed with support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UK Office for National Statistics, the portal serves both as a national repository of SDG indicators and a collaborative hub promoting transparency and accountability.
He stressed that the effectiveness of the platform hinges on consistent contributions from across government.
“This is not the responsibility of ZIMSTAT or the ministry alone. It is a national task requiring full cooperation from all SDG cluster leads, line ministries, and implementing agencies.”
He also emphasised the importance of disaggregated data — particularly across sex, age, geography and disability — in ensuring inclusive development.
“Without disaggregated data, we cannot truly ensure that no one is left behind,” he said.
ZIMSTAT reaffirmed its support for the rollout of Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs), which are being adopted by local authorities to enhance grassroots-level data collection and use.
“Strong local data leads to stronger national reporting,” said Mr Mukavhi, adding that the agency is working closely with provincial and municipal structures to build analytical capacity.
Looking ahead, Mr Mukavhi called for sustained momentum.
“This launch is only the beginning. Every department must remain committed to keeping the platform up to date, relevant and reflective of Zimbabwe’s real progress on the SDGs,” he said.
The OpenSDG portal is now live and accessible to all users seeking accurate, timely, and actionable data on Zimbabwe’s path to sustainable development.
