Zindi Sports Gala explodes

ST Augustine’s High School in Penhalonga will turn into a hive of activity tomorrow when the second edition of the exciting Zindi Sports Gala gets underway.
The games begin after last Friday’s crucial preparatory meeting in which key stakeholders went on a round table to finalise preparations ahead of the Irene Zindi Sports Gala.

The exciting football and netball gala, which was launched last year, is sponsored by Mutasa South legislator Irene Zindi.

At its inauguration, the tournament incorporated ward-based teams as well as vocational training schools in Mutasa South constituency, but a developmental decision has since been made to exclusively have secondary schools compete in the tournament.

Zindi confirmed that the annual sporting fiesta will go ahead as per schedule.

“The games will be played as we had initially planned. We are happy that we are managing to carry on in our efforts to identify and develop sporting talent.

“We met with headmasters in the constituency to finalise preparations for the tournament and everything went on well. When we launched the tournament we had ward-based teams as well as vocational training schools in Mutasa South constituency, but we have since decided to rope in secondary schools. I believe we all have a duty in sporting to nurture talent at grassroots level if our national teams are to succeed, hence the decision to bring in secondary schools. All high schools in Mutasa will take part in the tournament wherein netball and soccer teams will compete for the top prizes. We are looking forward to exciting competition in both netball and soccer,” she said.

Magamba Vocational Training College won the soccer championship in last year’s edition.
