Seasoned Maskandi musician Zinjaziyamluma has applauded the Government for taking national events to different parts of the country, saying the move is bringing development and a sense of inclusion to previously marginalised areas.
Speaking ahead of his performance at this year’s Independence Gala, set for Saturday at Minda High School, Maphisa, the South Africa-based artiste said hosting the celebrations in Matabeleland South was both symbolic and impactful.
“We’ve seen the Government taking these celebrations across the country, and it’s an honour that the Independence celebrations are finally being held in my home province, Matabeleland South. Such a gesture brings a sense of belonging and unity to the people.
“These celebrations have also brought development to our region. We’ve seen a stadium being built, roads rehabilitated, and new infrastructure added at Minda High School. Beyond that, the gala has empowered local artistes, as many of us from this region are part of the main line-up, meaning we’ve also benefited economically,” he said.
Zinjaziyamluma, who is the only Maskandi artiste on the line-up, said his inclusion reflects the growing recognition of the genre on national platforms.
“It’s a privilege to be among the performers at this year’s Independence gala. Being called to perform at such a national event shows that I’m doing something right in my career. I’m the only Maskandi artiste on the line-up, which reflects my contribution to the genre.
“The stage will feature many Tshibilika musicians, but that doesn’t intimidate me as I’m used to performing alongside them. They are my brothers in music, and every time we share the stage, they know I always bring my best to match their energy.
“Being there to represent Maskandi shows that the genre is now gaining recognition in our country, and I promise a great performance to those who will attend,” he said.
The “Vela Bakubone” hitmaker, who collaborated with Shwi Mantombazane, will share the stage with a mix of established and emerging artistes, including Jeys Marabini, Clement Magwaza, Dereck Mpofu, Andy Muridzo and Sulumani Chimbetu. Other acts include Black Umfolosi, Ndolwane Super Sounds, Chase Skuza, Jah Master, Iyasa and Bolamba Culture Birds. The event will be hosted by Thulani Munyandi, Leonard Ncube, Nqobile Malinga and Phil Moyo.
The gala will follow the main Independence festivities at Maphisa Growth Point, where President Mnangagwa is expected to preside.
