ZLGCA celebrates Unity Day with reflections on achievements

THE Zimbabwe Liberated Girl Child in Action (ZLGCA) yesterday celebrated the Unity Day and reflected on its achievements in empowering the girl child.

The event brought together the organisation’s executive members from across the country.

Speaking during the event, ZLGCA executive director Mrs Anna Mabhena emphasised the significance of Unity Day, describing it as a commemoration of the peace and unity fought for during the liberation struggle.

“This year has been great for us as we have established viable income-generating projects, including poultry and farming. We also provided financial support for some of the girls,” she said.

Mrs Mabhena said most members of the organisation are children of war veterans and as such they appreciate the importance of peace and unity.

ZLGCA which has a membership of about 2 000 people, has made significant strides in reaching out to vulnerable girls and women.

“We plan to expand our projects meant to empower women and girls in order to ensure that no one is left behind. Our goal is to support vulnerable women, including those who are abused and those on drugs,” said Mrs Mabhena.

ZLGCA executive committee member Mr Mthabisi Mpofu said the organisation was growing rapidly.

“We are increasing our membership numbers daily and we are working on many projects meant to empower women and girls,” she said.

ZLGCA’s research and development director, Mr Abraham Mabhena, underscored the importance of learning from the past by appreciating the sacrifices made by Zimbabwe’s forefathers.

“This event aims to inspire young people to value unity and work together to address the challenges our country is facing. It’s a celebration of national pride, unity, and peace, which are essential for economic development and growth,” he said.
