ZNSSA leader Eddie “Mboma” Nyatanga said the death of the fans was a disaster, not only for the DeMbare family, but also for the entire football fraternity.
He said what was an exciting battle for the Castle Lager Premiership, between Dynamos and FC Platinum, had now lost its meaning following the death of the fans.
“It’s a tragedy for everyone who is connected to the Zimbabwean football family because it’s never an easy time when people lose their lives, especially when they are chasing their passion to support a game that they love,” said Nyatanga.
“These guys left their homes just to go and support their team and little did they know that they would not be coming back to their loved ones, including some little kids who don’t understand what is going on.
“It’s a very sad week for our football and we join the Dynamos family in mourning the death of these heroes.
“Every game has its heroes and we always believe that football, without the fans, will be nothing as a game and we take this opportunity to convey our message of condolences to their families so that they know we are with them in these tough times.”
Nyatanga said the ZNSSA leadership will discuss how best they could help the bereaved families.
“We also believe that Zifa and the PSL should also come on board and see where they can also help because the fans who died were football people.”
Nyatanga said the explosive championship battle had lost its meaning following the tragedy.
“While life has to go on for those of us who remain behind, and we need to be very strong, it’s easy to see that something has just died in this championship race following the news of the tragedy,” said Nyatanga.
“While we can celebrate if our favourite teams win, we cannot run away from the fact that those celebrations will always be overshadowed by the deaths of these young men.”
