IN a move aimed at promoting youths’ active participation in sports, the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) on Saturday donated an assortment of sporting equipment to Tongogara Refugee Camp.

The stuff included equipment for soccer, volleyball, table tennis, judo and teqball.

Handing over the equipment to the camp’s administrator, Mr Jonane Mhlanga, ZOC programmes officer Mr Newman Gomendo said their dream is to see refugees participate at future Olympic Games while representing Zimbabwe.

Mr Mhlanga expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it will go a long way in ensuring that refugees fully participate in sporting activities.

“The Government is committed to see refugees being involved and included in the country’s sport and cultural programmes. We are grateful for this timely donation by ZOC as it is also important in preventing idleness among youths where they may end up indulging in negative coping mechanisms such as drug and substance abuse, prostitution and delinquency,” said Mr Mhlanga.

Representatives of the refugee community’s sports section were also present at the event, which was held under strict Covid-19 protocols.
