ZPC KARIBA yesterday shot to the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table but their veteran coach Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa insists his side are not championship contenders. Tawanda Munyanduri’s second half goal at Nyamhunga took the home side’s points tall to 21, one ahead of FC Platinum who are inactive this weekend as they had players on national duty.

Interestingly, ZPC Kariba brought Pure Platinum Play’s one year league unbeaten run to an end last weekend courtesy of a 2-1 win at Mandava. After that match, FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza warned that Chidzambwa’s side deserves much more respect than they have been getting.

ZPC Kariba have lost once this season, a 0-2 away loss to How Mine on April 9, and are unbeaten in their last seven outings. Yesterday’s victory was their third on the trot but Chidzambwa is refusing to be carried away.

“At the moment we are not thinking about the title, we are just taking each game as it comes. “After all, my employers are not expecting us to win the championships, they want us to go bit by bit and see where we will end up,” he said.

Tsholotsho were caught napping in the 47th minute, their defenders failing to deal with a rebound after Marion Chang had done well to parry away a Daniel Chakupe shot. Munyanduri easily slotted the ball home.

Former Caps United winger Godknows Mangani had done well on the flank, dribbling past three defenders before he laid the ball to Chakupe. Tsholotsho coach Lizwe Sweswe was not amused by his team’s generous defending.

“My players went to sleep, they lost concentration at that moment. We will go back to the drawing board and try and improve on our shortcomings,” he said.
