Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) will continue to upgrade and align its skills to meet regional and international standards through training, a senior official has said.
Speaking during a graduation ceremony of 31 students who completed a six-month management, leadership and development course in correctional services at Chikurubi Training School yesterday, ZPCS Commissioner-General Retired Major- General Paradzai Zimondi said they had achieved international standards on prisons and correctional services.
He said this was achieved through training, as the organisation moved to sharpen its skills in correctional and rehabilitation.
“The training programme was designed with the view to embracing and supporting the ZPCS’s transformation thrust from the Penal to the Correctional Approach,” said Comm- Gen Zimondi.
“The programme was, therefore, designed to equip the trainees in their capacity as the ZPCS are middle managers with the appropriate and necessary knowledge that help in both facilitating and promoting the change that is consistent with international based practices in prison management.”
Comm-Gen Zimondi said the standards could only be achieved through training, which plays an important part in enabling effective management.
“We attained these standards through training. Training is an integral part of human resource development programme in almost all organisations,” he said. “In fact, it is the cornerstone of effective management because it makes employees more efficient and productive.”
Comm-Gen Zimondi said staff training and development was important in various ways.
“Training and up skilling the workforce can also encourage creativity and innovation in a new strategies and products that could lead into increased productivity, improved efficiency and standards of operation,” said Comm-Gen Zimondi.
He said a robust organisational staff training and development programme ensured employees had consistent experience and background knowledge relevant to basic policies and procedures to be followed to meet and maintain required world standards.
He said the course was important in that it offered competent solutions to any possible challenges and how to deal with them during service.
“I am happy to note you covered the critical areas that prepared you to proffer competent solution to any possible challenges that you encounter during the course your duties,” said Comm-Gen Zimondi.
