The trial of a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services guard who allegedly went to his in-laws residence armed with an AK47 rifle and fired three shots in an attempt to shoot his wife has been deferred to October 18. This was after the prosecution requested for the availability of the ballistic report in the docket.

Rangarirai Makanya (30) of Chikurubi Training Depot reportedly had an altercation with his wife Moreblessing on October 25 at around 9pm after the wife discovered a love message in his cellphone.

It is alleged that Makanya floored the defenceless Moreblessing with slaps and punches inflicting head injuries. The following day, Moreblessing went to seek recourse at her parents’ house in Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza.

Prosecutor Ms Rumbidzai Mushonga further alleged that two days later, Makanya followed her armed with the AK47 riffle which had 29 rounds.
Moreblessing’s brother, Phillimon was called to attend to the problems his sister was facing and that was when the irate Makanya arrived with a gun in his hand.

Phillimon asked Makanya why he had visited with a gun and this infuriated Makanya who then corked the gun. This forced his in-laws to wrestle him in an attempt to disarm him.

Makanya reportedly fired three rounds against the wall, missing his wife and Phillimon who managed to apprehend him.
Makanya was not asked to plead to attempted murder charge when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo.
He was remanded in custody to November 18 for trial.
