THE Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) officially launched its Strategic Plan (2026–2030), outlining a bold roadmap to enhance humanitarian action and strengthen community resilience in the face of rising disasters.
The launch was officiated by Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, represented by Acting Secretary Ignatius Mvere, who hailed the organisation’s critical role in national disaster management.
In a speech read on her behalf on Friday afternoon, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri applauded ZRCS as a vital pillar in emergency response.
“The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society continues to stand as both the first and last line of defence in times of disaster, providing immediate relief while remaining with affected communities throughout recovery and rebuilding,” she said.
She commended the organisation for complementing Government efforts in responding to climate-induced emergencies, public health threats and other crises.
The new strategy is anchored on four key pillars: strengthening disaster preparedness and response, promoting safe and dignified lives, mobilising resources through strategic partnerships and enhancing human capital, governance and systems.
ZRCS Secretary-General Elias Hwenga said the plan signals a shift towards a more proactive and community-centred approach to humanitarian work.
“This Strategic Plan is about staying ahead of crises, not just responding to them. We are strengthening our ability to anticipate risks, act early and support communities to recover faster and build resilience,” he said.
Hwenga added that improving the quality of life for vulnerable communities remains central to the organisation’s mission.
“At the heart of this strategy is our commitment to ensuring that communities live safe, healthy and dignified lives, with real opportunities to thrive,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of partnerships in scaling up humanitarian interventions, noting that collaboration will be key to mobilising resources and expertise.
Meanwhile, ZRCS president David Chaliyanika described the launch as a significant milestone that will guide the organisation’s vision over the next five years.
“This Strategic Plan builds on the strong foundations laid by the previous strategy. The lessons learned, progress achieved, and partnerships built over the years have shaped the direction we now take,” he said.
Chaliyanika said the strategy is designed to respond to emerging challenges, including climate change, food insecurity, migration and complex emergencies.
The plan is aligned with national development priorities and the global vision of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, reinforcing ZRCS’s role as a key humanitarian partner in Zimbabwe.
