THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a nationwide operation targeting crimes of concern and traffic offences, as authorities intensify efforts to maintain law and order, protect lives and property, and improve road safety across the country.
The operation, which began on Monday, is aimed at curbing a range of criminal activities, including murder, drug and substance abuse, attempted murder, robbery, unlawful entry into premises, theft, stock theft, rape, kidnapping, smuggling and assault.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation also targets traffic violations that continue to pose a threat to public safety.
These include the use of pirate taxis, commonly known as mushikashika, unregistered or unplated vehicles, drunk driving, driving without a licence, dangerous overtaking, failure to obey traffic lights and other forms of reckless driving.
“To complement the operation, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search blitzes, compliance inspections and public awareness campaigns across the country,” said Comm Nyathi.
He urged members of the public to observe the law and support police efforts in combating crime.
“The public is therefore encouraged to observe the law, be responsible citizens and support police efforts in the fight against crime,” he said.
Police statistics released on Wednesday show that on July 14 alone, a total of 1 809 arrests were made countrywide under the operation.
The arrests included 26 cases of theft, 63 cases involving unlawful possession of dangerous drugs, three robbery cases, one murder case, seven cases of unlawful entry and theft, and one stock theft case, among other offences.
Comm Nyathi said the cumulative number of arrests recorded since the launch of the operation has now risen to 2069.
He appealed to members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by reporting criminal activities and traffic violations.
Reports can be made at the nearest police station or through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp number 0712 800 197.
The latest operation comes as police continue to roll out measures aimed at reducing crime and promoting safer roads across the country.
