I WOULD like to commend the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for reintroducing speed traps as part of efforts to promote road safety and curb reckless driving on the country’s roads.
For a long time, motorists have raised concern over speeding, dangerous overtaking and other forms of irresponsible driving that continue to put the lives of passengers, pedestrians and other road users at risk. The return of speed checks is therefore a welcome development that will help restore discipline among motorists.
Speeding remains one of the major contributors to road accidents, and increased police visibility on highways and urban roads can serve as an important deterrent to those who ignore traffic regulations.
However, as the ZRP intensifies this initiative, it is important that the enforcement process remains transparent, professional and consistent.
Speed traps should not only be viewed as a way of penalising offenders, but as an educational tool aimed at encouraging motorists to adopt safer driving habits.
There is also a need for continued public awareness campaigns reminding drivers about the dangers of excessive speed and the importance of respecting road rules.
I urge motorists to support this initiative by driving responsibly. The roads belong to everyone, and every person has a role to play in reducing unnecessary loss of life through accidents.
The reintroduction of speed traps is a positive step towards creating safer roads, and the ZRP deserves recognition for taking action to protect citizens.
