ZRU manager Grant Mitchell resigns

Sables committee.
With Mitchell having been employed by the previous board that was led by Sithembilenkosini “Themba” Sibanda to find sponsorship and take care of the day-to-day running of the Union, it seems the former Cheetahs player has accepted failure.
ZRU president John Falkenberg and his board could not be reached for comment but The Herald has it on strong ground that the Old Georgians’ player/coach has left the post.
It was hoped that Mitchell would turn around the fortunes of the Union but he found it difficult to find sponsorship for the Union.
The ZRU accounts, according to the figures released at the annual meeting at the end of January, are in the red. The Sables owed creditors a total of US $116 000 as at 31 December 2011,” read the report.
However, Mitchell — who is also a strength and conditioning trainer — will have his business to run as he is set to open a gym and concentrate in health and fitness on a larger scale.
Sources told The Herald yesterday that Mitchell was now trying to help the Union find a replacement.
“He is still there to help the Union while they look for a replacement but he resigned and his last official day at work was on Wednesday,” said the source.
Last year Mitchell worked with the Sibanda-led board and successfully brought back Delta Beverages, through their Lion Lager brand, to sponsor both the Sables and the National Rugby League.
