ZIMBABWE Rugby Union (ZRU) vice-president south Martin Shone yesterday attended the funeral of Sables coach Peter de Villiers father in Paarl, South Africa.

Shone was the only member of the ZRU hierarchy who managed to make the trip to the Western Cape for burial. Peter de Villiers senior died last Tuesday due to old age at 91 and was laid to rest yesterday. He attended the funeral with a member of De Villiers’ representative Yasina Sports.

The ZRU second in charge said he was there to console the De Villiers family on behalf of ZRU president Aaron Jani as well as the Gerald Mlotshwa-led Sables Trust which made sure that the trip was possible. Jani could not attend the funeral since he is away on business in China.

“We are just here to support Peter and his family on behalf of the ZRU and the Sables Trust who made the trip possible,’’ Shone said.

De Villiers, a former Springboks coach was in February engaged as Sables mentor with his mandate being to ensure that Zimbabwe qualify for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. -@Mdawini_29
