ZSM Marathon takes over Bulawayo

THE streets of Bulawayo come alive this morning as hundreds of runners from across Zimbabwe and beyond hit the road for the third edition of the Zimbabwe School of Mines (ZSM) Marathon.

Now firmly established on the national distance running calendar, the ZSM Marathon continues its steady rise in stature and this year’s race promises to be the biggest yet.

For the first time, the event shifts from White City to the centrally located Khumalo Hockey Stadium, a move organisers say will improve logistics and enhance the race day experience.

“We are confident that everything is in place for a flawless event,” said the Bulawayo Athletics Board.

“The ZSM Marathon has grown impressively and this year promises to be bigger and better. Khumalo Hockey Stadium is a central and accessible venue and we are expecting an electric atmosphere.”

Launched in 2023 as a half marathon, the race was upgraded last year to a full 42.2km in celebration of the institution’s 90th anniversary. It now includes four categories, the full marathon, a 21.1km half marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run.

Entry fees remain accessible: US$15 for the full, half and 10km races and US$10 for the fun run.

Beyond the finish lines and podiums, the race is deeply rooted in community. Organised by the Zimbabwe School of Mines, the marathon promotes physical wellness, brings people together and raises funds for the institution’s academic and outreach programmes.

ZSM principal Edwin Gwaze has previously called the marathon “a major success” and a vital part of the school’s public engagement drive.

Last year’s edition drew elite runners from across the region, including Kenya and Ethiopia. Kenya’s Rosina Kiboino stormed to the women’s crown in 2:52:13, ahead of Zimbabwe Republic Police runner Phillipa Dube (2:54:48) with Anne Chirisa placing third in 2:59:32.

In the men’s race, Real Stars Harare athlete Gamuchirai Tsveta broke the tape in 2:19:25. He was followed by Lyno Muchena (2:24:02) and Israel Mudimba (2:24:22), rounding off a thrilling contest.
