Zvishavane-based traditional dance group Undi Gure Zambia is set to make its first appearance at the Chibuku Neshamwari traditional dance competition national finals, representing the Midlands province.
Formed in 1982 by the late Lazarus Undi and his family, the group has 20 members, with 15 actively performing.
Group leader Lloyd Kuziyamisa said intense rehearsals are underway ahead of the national finals.
“We feel honoured to have won the provincial round. Now it’s about refining our craft and proudly showcasing our tradition. We’re practicing day in and day out to perfect our dances and overall performance, and we’re also seeking advice from other experts,” said Kuziyamisa.
Though they previously competed provincially in 2010 and 2024, this year marks their long-awaited breakthrough to the national stage.
“We’ve taken part in the competition before, but didn’t make it to the nationals. This year, we’ve geared up.”
At the competition, they will perform the Zambia Nyau dance, deeply rooted in their cultural identity.
“Our goal is to preserve and promote cultural heritage through dance.” – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
