“This will be the first time the awards will be presented since the council became a ‘stand-alone’ (institution) two years ago,” he said. “Youths below 35 years of age eligible to participate.
“We will be honouring outstanding individuals and youth serving organisations that have made achievements towards nation building in general and youth development in particular.”
“President Mugabe will present the awards which will be held on December 7.”
The public can make nominations or individuals can submit their profiles to the council. Calls for nominations will be done through radio, newspapers, television and social media platforms.
Three candidates will be shortlisted in each category by the respective committees that will determine the final winner and those who make it will be announced on the day of the awards.
Twenty-five awards will be issued in seven categories.
The categories are Business/Entrepreneurship Award, which will honour outstanding youths in tourism and hospitality, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, young entrepreneurship and corporate.
The arts category will recognise the exceptional youths in visual arts, performing arts, film and television, youth arts icon and literary arts. Under the sport category, the young sportsman and woman of the year (aged between 18 and 35) and junior sportsperson (aged between 10 and 17) will be recognised. In the science and technology category, awards will be given in areas of innovation, information communication technology, engineering, youth science and technology. The outstanding youths in print, electronic and new media as well as a youth media icon will also be honoured. There will be a category for most promising young person above all categories — special contribution while special mention would be given to organisations involved in youth progammes.
An adjudication committee chaired by Buy Zimbabwe founder Mr Munyaradzi Hwengwere has been set up. Other members are Professor Christopher Chetsanga, Zimbabwe Platinum Mine head of corporate affairs Ms Busi Chindove, celebrated poet Albert Nyathi, National Gallery of Zimbabwe executive director Mrs Doreen Sibanda, Kingdom Bank founder Mr Nigel Chanakira and director of the National Arts Council Mr Elvas Mari.
Mr Dzikira said the awards would help enhance awareness and appreciation on the importance of youth leadership and partnership in addressing various developmental concerns affecting young people.
The ZYC has so far partnered the Zimbabwe Newspapers Group and Buy Zimbabwe to ensure the event is a success.
