10 years for raping niece

Court Reporter
A 68-YEAR-OLD Chikanga man, Harry Peter Mangani, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of raping his 28-year-old niece in 2016.
Mutare regional magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiwundura, delivered the ruling yesterday at the Mutare Magistrates’ Court.
Mangani, who is married to the complainant’s aunt, had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The court heard that Mangani sexually assaulted the young woman at his house, where they lived together as part of the extended family.
In handing down the sentence, Mrs Chiwundura emphasised the gravity of the offence, noting that the breach of familial trust compounded the seriousness of the crime.
She said such acts left little room for leniency, as they undermine both the victim’s dignity and the sanctity of family bonds.
