140 000 vehicle licences issued

The authority’s head of administration and human resources, Mr Patrick Murove, said           415 994 out of an estimated 800 000 vehicles in the country were licensed during the previous quarter.

Licence discs for the last quarter expired on 30 September.

“In terms of the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, a reprieve of 30 days is provisioned for where penalties will only be charged after expiry of such a 30-day reprieve.

“In this regard the Zinara system is automated to start charging penalty and administration fees after 30 days from the date of expiry,” he said.

In a snap survey conducted by this paper there were long queues at Zimpost offices in the city centre as motorists paid for renewal of their licence discs.

Mr Murove said his organisation has been processing between 20 000 and 25 000 transactions per day in the past two weeks.

“Even if the defaulters try to escape, the computerised system will accrue arrears, penalties and fines which will have to be paid.

“Any unlicensed vehicle will not be allowed to use the road,” he said.

The fees schedule ranges from $20 to $105 per term depending on the class and net mass of the vehicle.
