Farmers unions in collaboration with the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) have acquired 15 automatic weather stations and 28 moisture censors worth more than US$450 000.
These will be installed in disaster-prone rural areas across the country.
The equipment will work together with the manual weather stations and will give accurate forecasts for farmers to maximise their yields.
In an interview, Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) secretary general, Mr Paul Zakariya said the weather stations will predict ground frost and temperatures, which is critical for farmers.
“There is a growing demand for bundled services that also include location-specific needs for rural communities,” said Mr Zakariya.
He said the weather stations and moisture census are going to be game changers.
“Farmers can work with the applications that we are bringing. We want to make sure that farmers interact to facilitate the dissemination of information. So there are a lot of things we stand to benefit from this,” he said.
