George Maponga in Masvingo
Two people died while two others were injured early on Sunday in a freak accident involving three buses along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway near Bubi.
The first deceased was a passenger in a Tombs Transport bus. He is reported to have died on the spot when he was hit by the bus’ trailer at the 192km peg along the highway after a speeding Rimbi Company bus had allegedly rammed into the trailer after the driver had apparently lost control of the bus.
The second person died after he jumped out of the Rimbi bus through the window when the bus veered off the road.
The Rimbi bus also rammed into a stationary Mhokodo Transport bus resulting in the latter overturning leaving two passengers seriously injured.
The pile up had allegedly started after a Tombs Transport bus developed a mechanical fault and pulled off the road after hitting a donkey around 4am.
A Mbokodo Transport bus then stopped to try and assist some of the stranded passengers who were in the Tombs bus.
A speeding Rimbi Transport bus then hit the Tombs bus trailer forcing it to overturn.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said the Rimbi bus also hit the Mbokodo Transport bus and it overturned.
“The bodies of the deceased and the injured were all taken to Beitbridge district hospital,” said Inspector Dhewa.
It is not clear where all the three buses were going.
