THE fuel-guzzling rot at Bulawayo City Council’s Fire and Ambulance Services Department has finally hit boiling point, with the key suspect, a top manager, suspended in the wake of a diesel scandal worth over 20 000 litres!
Check Point can exclusively reveal that the embattled manager, who is accused of masterminding a three-year diesel siphoning spree, was slapped with a suspension letter last Monday.
This follows a damning internal audit sparked by our explosive exposé last month.
Insiders say the noose is tightening, with the audit report already doing the rounds among top city executives ahead of its tabling at the next full council meeting. A disciplinary hearing was fast-tracked and held last Thursday.
“There was no way of covering this one up,” said a senior council source. “The audit nailed it and with the media already on it, heads had to roll. The suspension came first, but the next steps are almost a formality now.”
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is also circling, having indicated they’re waiting for the internal probe to conclude before pouncing.
Mayor David Coltart has promised full transparency once investigations are complete, a move seen as crucial in restoring public trust.
“We’re not sweeping this under the carpet,” Coltart said.
However, city spokesperson Bongiwe Ngwenya played it safe: “Investigations are underway, and please note that the City of Bulawayo does not comment on employee matters in the media.”
As the city counts the cost of vanishing fuel, all eyes are now on the council chambers.
