MORE than 2,000 small to medium enterprises (SMEs) have been entered into the Bulawayo database as part of the ongoing SMEs registration process. The registration exercise started early last month across the country and is aimed at enhancing the growth of the SMEs sector and its contribution to the national economy.
Bulawayo Chamber of Small to Medium Enterprises provincial head, Energy Majazi said the registration exercise was progressing well.
“We’ve managed to record more than 2,600 SMEs in the Bulawayo database. We’ve details on the type of businesses they have, the number of people they employ and where their businesses are located,” he said.
“However, only 600 have paid the required registration fee of $3 to be part of the formalisation programme. The major challenge we’re facing is spreading information to SMEs. We’ve our sensitisation programmes in different suburbs in the city but they aren’t enough.”
At least 21 SMEs registration centres have been set up in different city suburbs including Emganwini, Pumula, Njube and Magwegwe.
The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has said it would start collecting taxes from SMEs this year to widen the government’s revenue base.
