No more State-assisted funerals for accident victims

Harare Bureau
THE Government has withdrawn State-assisted funerals for accident victims, passing the responsibility to transport operators and those responsible for the accidents.

In the past, the Government used to provide assistance to families of people who perish in road accidents.

But Secretary for Transport, Communications and Infrastructure Development Mr Pattison Mbiriri, speaking ahead of the festive season that is usually characterised by bloody accidents, yesterday said Government was in the process of reversing State-assisted funerals for accident victims.

Mr Mbiriri said this to stakeholders in the transport sector, among them the Passenger Transport Organisation and commuter omnibus associations in Harare.
“The reality now is that it may not be possible for Government to carry  the financial burden and the obligation would be on you (transport operators),” he said.

Residents blast BCC over water disconnections

Chronicle Reporter
BULAWAYO residents have attacked the city council for resorting to disconnecting water

to force residents to settle their bills, saying the exercise was tantamount to murder.

According to the latest council report, the local authority has embarked on a massive water disconnection exercise that may see thousands of Bulawayo residents spending Christmas without water, in a bid to recover $61 million that it is owed by residents.

The exercise that is probably the most widespread in history, is being carried out even over weekends.

In separate interviews, residents’ representatives admitted that people should clear their bills, but said council should get its “shambolic” billing system in order to encourage them to pay.
They called on Government to come up with a programme to help them deal with mounting bills.
