PROLONGED drought in the Horn of Africa is the immediate cause of the severe food crisis already affecting around 10 million people in parts of Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia. Rains have failed over two seasons, with a strong La Niña event having a dramatic impact across the east coast of Africa. Now this year’s wet season has not done much to aid in the farming activities all across Africa, giving rise to a probable drought.

Murder cases put damper on festive mood

THE Midlands Province has recorded four murder cases and an attempted murder case within a space of three days signalling a bloody festive season for the province.
Acting police spokesperson for Midlands, Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the four murder cases occurred in Redcliff, Lower Gweru and Silobela between Wednesday and Friday.
Asst Insp Mahoko said the attempted murder case occurred in Mberengwa on Friday.

THE future of scores of vulnerable children hangs in the balance after a Bulawayo-based non-governmental organisation stopped paying their school fees in protest over the bureaucracy involved.
Haven Trust Safe Shelter, situated in Bulawayo’s Hillside suburb, provides shelter and security for gender-based violence (GBV) victims and it has since removed its service of paying fees for orphans because of the procedure and paperwork involved.
