Inquest findings final, say experts

THE presiding magistrate in General Solomon Mujuru’s inquest has absolute control of the proceedings and there is no room for family members and interested parties to appeal against the court’s decision, legal experts said yesterday.
Only the Attorney-General can use his discretion whether or not to agree with the magistrate’s findings and recommendations when they are finally forwarded to his office.
Lawyers who spoke to The Herald yesterday referred to the Inquests Act, which they said did not provide for any contestation of the findings of the court during and at the end of the proceedings.
10 Zim perish in SA accident

TEN Zimbabweans died on the spot, while 15 others were seriously inju-red when a Harare-bound Iveco mi-nibus collided with a haulage truck 25km outside Makhadho town along the N1 Highway in South Africa ear-ly yesterday morning.
The accident occurred at around 4:50am.
Nine of the deceased, including a child, were in the bus while the 10th victim was the driver of the truck.
Police spokesman for Makhadho Captain Maano Sadike confirmed the accident yesterday saying they were now investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Tobacco farmers eye rich pickings

ZIMBABWE’S tobacco farmers could make rich pickings when the auction floors open next week as the world’s main competitors expect low yields owing to floods.
Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board chief executive officer Dr Andrew Matibiri said Brazil and the United States had their crops swept away by floods.
He said the situation will create a deficit in the world market.
