More tollgates to be erected
By Temba DubeTHREE new tolling points will soon be set up on the highway from Plumtree to Mutare, with two between Bulawayo and Harare, bringing to nine the number of tolling points on the highway.
The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) will install state-of-the-art toll plazas, which look like those found along highways in neighbouring South Africa, on the 820 kilometres of highway that is being rehabilitated and upgraded to international standards.
The plazas would all be erected on the highway within the next three years, with the first one set to be operational by the end of September.
Highway rehab to begin after Easter
Chronicle ReporterTHE actual work on the rehabilitation and upgrading of the 820 kilometre stretch of the highway from Plumtree to Mutare will start after the Easter Holidays, following the completion of tests to determine the scope of works.
At least six types of tests were done to determine the structural integrity, residual and tensile strength of the entire stretch.
The road is being rehabilitated under a partnership between Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) and South Africa-based internationally renowned road construction experts, Group Five.
Council summons director of housing over stands
Chronicle ReporterTHE stringent conditions set by the Bulawayo City Council for the allocation and sale of housing stands will top the agenda at next week’s full council meeting, Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Thaba Moyo said yesterday.
In an interview, Clr Moyo said the council had summoned the director of housing and community services, Mr Isaiah Magagula to give a report and update councillors on the issue.
Last week the council reportedly came up with stringent conditions for allocating and selling housing stands. The local authority is demanding a deposit of $4 200 for a stand in the new medium density

Mali coup: Minister finally back home

FOREIGN Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi finally arrived home on Monday morning after being caught up in the coup in Mali that ousted President Amadou Toumani Toure last week.
Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, Minister Mumbengegwi said he was happy to be home after being evacuated on Saturday night from the hotel in which he had been staying since last Wednesday.
The minister narrated how he and 12 other African foreign ministers had gone to Bamako to discuss the security situation in the Sahel region in the wake of the Libyan Nato bombing, which culminated in the ouster of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

New marriage certificate unveiled

THE Registrar-General’s Office has unveiled a new marriage certificate and measures to curb marriages of convenience.
The highly-securitised certificate comes into force with immediate effect.
Old marriage certificates, however, remain valid while marriage officers have been given a month to surrender old certificates they have not yet issued out.
The Government last month introduced measures to flush out foreigners and Zimbabweans who have been abusing the country’s marriage laws.
Such measures included computerised and serialised marriage certificates to curb multiple marriages, marriages of convenience and immigration fraud.
Foreigners, mostly those from Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, enter into marriages of convenience and marry more than one wife using different names to secure Zimbabwean citizenship
