Zim-SA border post gears up for Easter

Thupeyo Muleya Beitbridge Bureau
THE Department of Immigration says it is ready to deal with the increased volume of traffic expected at Beitbridge Border Post during the Easter holidays.
Assistant regional immigration officer- in-charge of Southern Region, Mr Charles Gwede, said they had come up with measures to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

The department will implement the clearance system it used during the Christmas holiday last year.
The system, he said, will be constantly reviewed depending on the situation on the ground.
Mr Gwede said they had agreed in principle with their counterparts in South Africa to align the clearance of both human and vehicular traffic coming into and leaving Zimbabwe.
“We have collapsed our four shifts to three with effect from Monday (today) and we will be alternating between three and two depending on the volume of traffic until the end of the Easter holidays.

Zesa intensifies disconnections

DEFAULTERS should brace for power disconnections in the next two weeks as Zesa Holdings intensifies efforts to clear the US$76 million it owes Mozambique.
Energy and Power Development Minister Elton Mangoma yesterday said Mozambique had agreed to increase power supply in the interim if Zimbabwe cuts down its debt to below US$40 million.
This, he said, will only be possible through disconnections.
Minister Mangoma was in Mozambique last Thursday where he met his counterpart Mr Salvado Namburete to deliberate on strategies that could see Zimbabwe receive increased electricity supply.
Said Minister Mangoma: “The meeting was fruitful because the guys from Mozambique were co-operative and progressive.
“They agreed to increase power supply once we have made our payment. The guys are expecting us

Man guns down brother over parking space

Obert Chifamba Herald Reporter
A TAFARA man yesterday shot and killed his brother in a fight over parking space.
Tendai Mungororo reportedly returned home from a funeral and found his 33-year-old brother Tichafunga’s car parked in his parking space.
According to a neighbour, an altercation ensued and Tendai allegedly hit his younger brother with an assortment of household utensils all over the body.
“Tendai’s wife could not restrain him as he was seething with anger. When Tichafunga realised the attack was escalating, he tried to escape whereupon Tendai rushed to his car, pulled a gun and shot him in the chest,” said the neighbour.
On realising what he had done, Tendai bundled Tichafunga into his car and drove him to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The neighbour said Tendai’s wife then rushed to the Mungororo’s parents’ home in the same neighbourhood to report the incident.
