He used to sodomise me — murder suspect tells court

Court Reporter

A man accused of murdering an elderly man staying alone in Bulawayo’s Pumula North suburb and later burying the body in a shallow grave in the yard yesterday stunned the court when he claimed the old man had over the years sodomised him.

At his initial appearance yesterday, Daniel Sinkala told Bulawayo provincial magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja that each time the late William Longwe would have anal sex with him he would pay him $50.

He said events leading to the killing of the old man were that after having anal sex with him twice, Longwe told him that he did not have money to pay him.

It was then that he decided to kill him and sell his property so that he would get his $50.

Sinkala (24), of House Number 687 New Luveve, was not formally charged with murder as defined in Section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

He was remanded in custody to 7 August and was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.

He had his warned and cautioned statements, which he made to the police after his arrest, confirmed meaning they can be used in a trial court as evidence.

Mr Masimba Saruwaka for the State told the court that on 13 July this year, Sinkala proceeded to House Number 6928 Pumula North where Longwe was staying alone.
