President launches women’s empowerment framework

Sydney Kawadza and Paidamoyo Chipunza
President Mugabe yesterday officially launched Government’s Broad Based Women’s Economic Empowerment Framework which seeks to provide a guiding outline for economic empowerment.
He, however, urged women to develop the necessary skills that would ensure success in their business activities.

President Mugabe also hailed women’s contribution to Zimbabwe’s growth and sustenance during the sanctions-induced economic downturn.

He also took a swipe at the banking sector for charging exorbitant interests rates that are detrimental to the development of businesses in Zimbabwe.
President Mugabe expressed doubt that Britain, US and their Western allies would remove the illegal economic sanctions they imposed on Zimbabwe.

The Broad Based Women’s Economic Empowerment Framework has inspired Government’s efforts to achieve gender equality and women empowerment.
It also has a broad-based agenda of ensuring sustainable growth in Zimbabwe.

THE Copac management committee yesterday handed over the final draft constitution to the Global Political Agreement principals for final determination.

Cde Chinamasa represents Zanu-PF in the management committee while the MDC-T and MDC formations are represented by secretaries-general Mr Tendai Biti and Mrs Priscilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga respectively.

The Select Committee also announced that the final draft was being translated into various national languages.
In an interview yesterday, Cde Chinamasa said the management committee completed a review of the final draft on Wednesday.

“The management committee completed its task yesterday (Wednesday) and the co-chairpersons have presented it to the principals for determination.
“The matter is now in their hands.”

By-elections to be held in 38 constituencies

Lloyd Gumbo Herald Reporter
JUSTICE and Legal Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa yesterday told Senators that by-elections will be held for all vacant seats in Parliament and local authorities instead of just three constituencies ordered by the Supreme Court in its ruling last week.

Minister Chinamasa was responding to a question from Rushinga Senator, Cde Damian Mumvuri (Zanu-PF) who sought to know the implications of the Supreme Court ruling.

“The House needs to know that country-wide, we don’t have three vacancies, but 38 in both the Senate and the House of Assembly,” Minister Chinamasa said.

“Country-wide, we will have to run harmonised elections for all vacant seats in both Parliament and local authorities.
“The implication (of the ruling) is that the situation in 38 parliamentary vacant constituencies is similar to the situation in the three constituencies. The implication is we can’t hold by-elections in three vacant constituencies only, but in 38 parliamentary vacant seats and in all vacant seats in local authorities as well.”

However, Minister Chinamasa said he was consulting more to grasp the implications of the ruling.
“Obviously the rule of law requires that we abide by the judgment.
