EDITORIAL COMMENT: People of high integrity should handle trust funds

Zimbabwe on Thursday recorded yet another milestone in its quest to empower rural communities when President Mugabe launched the Matabeleland North Community Share Ownership Scheme/Trust in Hwange town. Matabeleland North becomes the fifth province where communities are benefiting directly from the exploitation of natural resources in their areas.

Student teacher jailed for robbery

POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested a final year student teacher from Hillside Teachers’ College who was in the habit of picking up prostitutes from a hotel, allegedly raped and robbed them of their cellphones at knife point.

Mathias Takavangadza (24), of Chikwadze Village, Chief Nyajena, Masvingo, yesterday pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and was convicted.

Senior Western Division Regional Magistrate Mr Owen Tagu sentenced him to 10 years in prison of which three years were conditionally suspended for five years. In mitigation, Takavagadza, who was supposed to close college yesterday, and majored in Geography, told the court that he committed the offences because he was facing financial difficulties.
