Malema in Zimbabwe on private visit
Harare Bureau
Former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema, who was ousted by the ANC leadership early this year, says he will never run away from problems he is facing in South Africa and is in Zimbabwe to gain strength to double his fight against imperialists back home.
Malema is facing corruption charges, which his supporters have said are politically motivated.
The outspoken Malema said when he came to Harare last Friday to attend the wedding of Zanu-PF Youth League members Mike Gava and Tendai Wenyika, some people in South Africa speculated that he was running away to seek political asylum in Zimbabwe.
“We are here to support Cde Mike and Cde Tendai. We are here to celebrate a beautiful wedding so we left our political vocabulary at home. Today we are at a wedding and so we don’t want to be talking a lot of politics. We want to dance and enjoy Zimbabwe and we want to see what Harare will offer us.
Uproar over pre-paid meter installations
Pamela Shumba and Whichone Gwaindepi
BULAWAYO residents have resolved to block Zesa workers from installing pre-paid meters in their houses, saying the power utility is shortchanging them by insisting that they pay the outstanding balances before new accounts are activated.
Some residents from Makokoba are also against the move to install bulk meters.
This came out during separate meetings held in Makokoba and Nkulumane suburbs yesterday.
The power utility started installing pre-paid meters in Makokoba about three weeks ago, while the programme is yet to be rolled out in Nkulumane.
There was an uproar, however, in Makokoba after the power utility installed bulk pre-paid meters for consumers who were using bulk electricity meters.
Speaking during the meeting in Nkulumane’s Ward 23 where the meeting was organised by the Bulawayo United Residents Association (Bura), residents expressed disappointment at Zesa’s plan to replace the fixed billing system with pre-paid meters.
