THE Government has dismissed a bid by the Bulawayo City Council to take over the Nyamandlovu Aquifer from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa).
Council, in October last year, resolved to enlist the assistance of the Minister of Water Resources Management and Development, Dr Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, to wrest control of the aquifer from Zinwa.
The local authority argued that it had to be involved in fundraising campaigns almost every year to rehabilitate boreholes at the aquifer, only for Zinwa to fail to protect the boreholes from vandals.
Council felt that the water situation in Bulawayo would improve significantly if Dr Sipepa Nkomo allowed the city to run the aquifer boreholes.
Zinwa is the entity mandated with the control of bulk water sources in the country.
Farmers increase tobacco hectarage

Victoria Falls heritage status unchanged

THE World Heritage Status of the Victoria Falls Rainforest has not changed as the world wonder is still recognised by Unesco as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Tourism and Hospitality Minister, Engineer Walter Mzembi has said.
Eng Mzembi said only God could delist the Victoria Falls Rainforest from being one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
Commenting on reports which alleged that the Victoria Falls Rainforest had been delisted from being one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World making way for the so called New7Wonders of the World which include the Table Mountain of South Africa, Eng Mzembi said the Rainforest, which is the largest curtain of flowing water in the world, would remain a natural wonder until the end of time.Binga to apply for town status
