ANNUAL Inflation shed 0,01 percentage points on the November rate to minus 0,80 percent in December as the economy drifts further into negative inflation due to a stronger dollar. The Zimbabwe National Statistical Agency said this means that prices, as measured by the all items consumer index, decreased by an average 0,80 percent in the last 12 months.
Annual year-on-year food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation prone to transitory shocks stood at minus 2,70 percent while the non-food inflation came in at 0,04 percent.
Month-on-month rate of inflation in December 2014 was minus 0,09 percent, shedding 0,60 percentage points on the November rate of minus 0,69 percent, ZimStat said.
“This means that prices, as measured by the all items CPI decreased by an average rate of 0,09 percent from November 2014 to December 2014,” ZimStat reported yesterday.
The month-on-month food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation rate stood at minus 0,36 percent in December 2014, shedding 0,13 percent. The monthly non-food inflation stood at 0,04 percent, shedding 1 percentage points on the November 2014 rate.
A healthy dollar makes it cheaper for US dollar currency holders to buy imported goods. It also gives consumers holding the greenback more power for their funds when spending abroad.
