A TOTAL of 30 players from different schools in Zimbabwe came out tops in the intriguing NASH (National Association of Secondary Heads) National Chess tournament held at Mutare Teachers’ College last weekend.
The 30 players will represent the country in the international chess tournament scheduled to take place in Livingstone, Zambia, from December 5 to 14.
The event, which was attended by over 300 players from ages between 14 and 20, saw Manicaland Province producing three players.
The three students from Manicaland are Ngoni Kandimire (St Faith’s High School), Promise Mutigore (Chibuwe High School) and Irene Bene from Mt Selinda High School. They will compete in the Under-14 category.
Manicaland, against all odds, managed to rise above the mediocrity and surpassed last year’s dismal performance where they failed to produce a player to represent Team Zimbabwe.
Perennial powerhouses Harare Province had the largest chunk of representatives with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
They were followed by Bulawayo, that had one gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
Mashonaland Central Province was on position three with one gold medal and one silver medal. Midlands, Masvingo, Matabeleland North, Mashonaland West and Matabeleland South provinces had two medals each.
Manicaland head-in-charge for chess Lenos Madzikatire said the tournament was highly successful.
“It was a success and we hail all provinces for participating in the tournament. The event went well without any glitches and we are happy that unlike last year, Manicaland Province managed to produce three players who will be among the country’s representatives travelling to Zambia in December,” he said.
More than 100 teachers from various schools in the country attended the national chess workshop, which ran concurrently with the national tournament.
