IN a mysterious incident, a three-week-old Mwenezi infant was snatched from her mother’s house in the early hours of the morning a few minutes after the mother had gone to fetch water from a tap next door, police have confirmed.
Ms Vimbainashe Chongobeza (17) allegedly left her infant sleeping around 5am last week and went to fetch water, but when she returned the baby was gone. A search party was launched but the infant was never located.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the incident. She said by late Wednesday the infant had not been found but investigations were still in progress.
“We can confirm receiving a report of a missing infant from Neshuro Growth Point in Mwenezi. The three-week-old infant was left sleeping in the family bedroom but when the mother returned, she could not find her baby,” said Insp Mazula
She said on the previous night, the father Mr Charles Muzenda and mother of the child, Ms Chongobeza retired to bed in their bedroom with their new born baby, as usual.
Mr Muzenda was the first to leave the house for his workplace at a nearby growth point. Insp Mazula appealed to members of the public to assist police with information that can lead to the discovery of the child.
She advised mothers with newborn babies against leaving their infants unattended. Anyone with information on the infant’s whereabouts can contact Inspector Darlington Paunganwa at Mwenezi Police Station on 0772631259.-@walterbmswazie3
