INMIGRATION officials in Mutare yesterday busted a human trafficking ring and arrested 49 Malawians who were being transported to South Africa in a truck container.
The 49 were nabbed just after Mutare Teachers’ College at a car breaking garage and waste metal collection point near Feruka Road turn-off.
Regional Immigration Officer for Eastern Region, Mr Richard Tambandini, confirmed the arrest of the 49 Malawians.
“49 Malawians, comprising 44 men and five women, who were on their way to South Africa in a container have been arrested. They are going to be taken to court for illegal entry before being deported to Malawi,” he said.
Human trafficking is rampant in South Africa where some of the victims find themselves in commercial sexual exploitation and drug trafficking, among other vices.
